Boy Tour 1980 Leg I
Europe

09/06/1980 General Wolfe - Coventry, England
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, Out of Control, I Will Follow, Stories for Boys
encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
comment: Setlist is incomplete and possibly out of order. It is known that despite some audio problems they were called back for two encores, and that the second 11 O'Clock Tick Tock took place in one of them. This venue's name has typically been mis-spelled as "General Woolfe" over the years in U2 fan literature. It actually has only one "o", and derives its name from British Army officer Major General James P. Wolfe.

09/07/1980 Lyceum Ballroom - London, England
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Stories for Boys, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co. / Send in the Clowns (snippet)
encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
comment: Tickets for entry cost £3. U2 are billed as "U.2." and receive a lacklustre response from the crowd despite the band's - especially Bono's - efforts to gain their attention and generate enthusiasm. The most extreme example of this is when Bono leaps off a PA stack during The Electric Co., rips his pants wide open, and yells at the crowd "I'm wearing these for you! I'm wearing these for you!" U2's set was filmed to position cameras for headliner Echo & The Bunnymen, who were being recorded for the film Urgh! A Music War.

09/08/1980 Marquee Club - London, England
I Will Follow, Into the Heart, Shadows and Tall Trees, A Day Without Me
comment: Setlist is incomplete and out of order. Admission cost £1.25. In Melody Maker, Ian Pye only lists the above four songs in his review of the show. "An Cat Dubh" was almost certainly played before "Into the Heart" as the two have only ever been performed together. Only known performance of "Shadows and Tall Trees" on the Boy Tour.

09/09/1980 Berkeley - Bristol, England
I Will Follow, Out of Control
comment: Setlist is incomplete. As few as 5 people were in attendance.

09/11/1980 Wellington Club - Hull, England
setlist not available
comment: U2's only performance in Hull. They perform on the second floor of the club as a darts match was occurring on the main floor.

09/12/1980 Taboo Club - Scarborough, England
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Touch, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co. / Send in the Clowns (snippet) / Can't Find My Way Home (snippet), Things To Make And Do, Stories for Boys, Boy-Girl, Out of Control
encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
comment: First known complete setlist from the Boy Tour. The audience is small with no more than 25 people in attendance.

09/13/1980 Queen's Hall - Leeds, England
A Day Without Me, An Cat Dubh, The Electric Co., 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
comment: U2 appear on the opening day of the 'Futurama 2' festival. Tickets cost £6 for single-day entry or £10 for both days. The setlist is incomplete. "Into the Heart" was almost certainly played following "An Cat Dubh" as the two have only ever been played together. Some of the other acts include Simple Minds, Robert Fripp, and Siouxsie And The Banshees. Melody Maker asserts the festival had an unpleasant atmosphere but they positively review U2.

09/15/1980 Marquee Club - London, England
setlist not available
comment: Admission cost £1.25.

09/16/1980 Fiesta Suite - Plymouth, England
The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Touch, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co., Things To Make And Do, Stories for Boys, Boy-Girl, Out of Control
comment: Earliest known performance of The Ocean, though it may have been played at previous concerts in September. A poster for the concert advertises the band as "The U2s". Admission was just £1.25 in advance and the crowd is limited to those 18+. The venue capacity is reported as 1500 but less than 100 attend.

09/17/1980 Demelzas - Penzance, England
setlist not available
comment: Although listed in promotional material, it appears this concert was cancelled in favour of one in Birmingham on the same night. Adverts in the Record Mirror and NME the week of the show confirm this.

09/17/1980 The Golden Eagle - Birmingham, England
setlist not available
comment: U2 were scheduled to perform at Demelzas in Plymouth on this date, but several media articles indicate that was cancelled for unconfirmed reasons and U2 played in Birmingham instead.

09/18/1980 Civic Hall - Totnes, England
setlist not available
comment: Local press at the time confirm that this performance was cancelled. A telegram from the promoter stated that a band member had appendicitis, although U2 played two concerts between the telegram being sent and this date. A make-up show was reportedly scheduled for the following month but also cancelled after rock concerts at the venue were banned by the city council. The planned date of the make-up show is not known.

09/19/1980 Marshall Rooms - Stroud, England
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, Touch, A Day Without Me, Twilight, Stories for Boys
comment: Setlist is incomplete.

09/21/1980 Nag's Head - Wollaston, England
setlist not available
comment: Tickets for this concert are the cheapest of the tour, costing only £0.50.

09/22/1980 Marquee Club - London, England
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, Touch, Twilight, Boy-Girl
comment: Admission cost £1.25. Setlist is incomplete. All known songs come from subsequent live releases over the years. "Boy-Girl" from this show appeared as a b-side on the "I Will Follow" single, and the remastered version of Boy. "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" was also released on the remastered Boy. "Touch" and "Twilight" were both released on the 40th anniversary edition of "11 O'Clock Tick Tock".

09/23/1980 Limit Club - Sheffield, England
setlist not available

09/24/1980 Bogarts - Birmingham, England
setlist not available
comment: U2 were advertised to be playing in Birmingham on this date but it was cancelled. U2 performed in Aylesbury that night in support of Rory Gallagher instead.

09/24/1980 Friars Club - Aylesbury, England
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Touch, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co., Things To Make And Do, Out of Control
comment: Setlist is incomplete - it is likely there were a couple more songs and the order may not be exact. U2 were added as a last minute support for Rory Gallagher in place of Rage and were paid £25. A show scheduled to occur on this date, at Bogarts in Birmingham, did not happen. Admission cost £3.25 but people also needed a club membership to enter which cost £0.25 at the door for those without one.

09/25/1980 Brady's - Liverpool, England
setlist not available
comment: Ticket prices were advertised as both £1.25 and £1.50, the latter likely the price of entry at the door.

09/26/1980 Cedar Club - Birmingham, England
The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Touch, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co., Things To Make And Do, Stories for Boys, Boy-Girl, Out of Control
comment: Setlist is believed to be complete without an encore, though there may have been one. Reception to the band was poor with some people sitting on the stage and others ignoring them entirely. Admission was £3.

09/27/1980 Lanchester Polytechnic - Coventry, England
setlist not available
comment: Tickets cost £1 if bought in advance from the student union.

09/29/1980 Marquee Club - London, England
The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Touch, An Cat Dubh / (Not Just) Knee Deep (snippet) / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co. / Send in the Clowns (snippet) / Can't Find My Way Home (snippet), Things To Make And Do, Stories for Boys, Boy-Girl, Out of Control
encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
comment: Admission cost £1.25. This show was released as Another Time Another Place: Live at The Marquee. "Touch", "Twilight", and the second "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" were not included on the release.

09/30/1980 Polytechnic - Brighton, England

encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
comment: Between 50 and 100 people are in the studio for this performance. This is U2's first performance outside of Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is recorded for Dutch radio and broadcast the next day (minus the first rendition of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock).

10/15/1980 The Milkyway - Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Touch, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, A Day Without Me, Twilight, The Electric Co. / Send in the Clowns (snippet), Things To Make And Do, Stories for Boys, Boy-Girl

encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow
comment: The main set is believed to be missing one or two songs at the tail end. It is also possible (but unlikely) that the second performance of I Will Follow was not the final song.

10/17/1980 Gigant - Apeldoorn, Netherlands
The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, Twilight, Out of Control
comment: Setlist is incomplete. Before the concert begins U2 are shown physical copies of Boy for the first time.

10/18/1980 Claridge - Brussels, Belgium

comment: First U2 concert in Belgium. Admission was 220 Belgian francs. The show was just over 30 minutes in length and may have been ended prematurely by the venue owners.

setlist not available
comment: Tickets cost £3. U2 are billed as "U.2.". This performance is their last prior to the release of Boy the next day.

comment: U2 perform in the Junior Common Room of Rutherford College at Kent University. Tickets are £0.50, the lowest price of the tour, and all 150 sell out before the show. First known performances of "The Cry" and "Father is an Elephant".

comment: Admission cost £1.75. The concert was besieged by a foul odour from nearby factories.

I Will Follow, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, The Electric Co., Stories for Boys
encores: I Will Follow

encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, The Ocean, Father Is An Elephant
comment: This is U2's first concert in Scotland and the band achieves a sell-out attendance of 400 people. The setlist is believed to be incomplete; a review in 'The Student' offhandedly mentions "Twilight" and "Shadows and Tall Trees" ("I mean, we can’t have no punks singing all this romantic stuff about childish innocence, “Twilight” and “Shadows and Tall Trees”, can we?"), but it is not certain if they were actually played. If they were then this is the only known performance of "Shadows and Tall Trees" after the release of Boy, and only it's second of the tour.

11/22/1980 Brady's - Liverpool, England
setlist not available

11/24/1980 Lanchester Polytechnic - Coventry, England

encores: 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, The Ocean, Father Is An Elephant
comment: Last known performance of "Father is an Elephant"; the song would eventually evolve into the track "Rejoice". The sound quality at the start of the set was bad, reportedly a result of Bono attempting to adjust the sound setup.

11/29/1980 Keele University - Newcastle, England
setlist not available

11/30/1980 Jenkinson's - Brighton, England
setlist not available
comment: Tickets cost £1.90 in advance and £2.50 at the door.

12/03/1980 Théâtre Mogador - Paris, France

comment: U2's first concert in France. This show was advertised as taking place at Pavillon Baltard but the venue was changed for unknown reasons.

12/04/1980 Pavillon Baltard - Nogent-sur-Marne, France
11 O'Clock Tick Tock, An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart, Another Time, Another Place, The Cry / The Electric Co. / Send in the Clowns (snippet), Things To Make And Do, Twilight, I Will Follow

12/06/1980 Pavillon Baltard - Nogent-sur-Marne, France
setlist not available
comment: U2 are advertised as performing on the ticket stub, but this is impossible as they were in New York City for the opening night of the second leg.
